Description

Produced using the same technique as the renowned Zheng Shan Xiao Zhong, also known as Lapsang Souchong, except for the smoking stage. The main difference between Jin Jun Mei and traditional leaf Lapsang Souchong lies in the large content of buds.

Jin Jun Mei was first created in 2005 when two tea enthusiasts from Beijing visited Lyan Jun De, a famous tea master in the mountains. They requested him to make a special Lapsang Souchong using buds. Lyan Jun De fulfilled the request by collecting around 750g of buds, from which he made approximately 200g of tea. This tea was first tasted in late June 2005. The tea leaves, covered with golden fuzz, resembled eyebrows (in Chinese, “mei”), hence the name Jin Jun Mei, taking the character “Jun” from the master’s name Lyan Jun De.

It turned out something like “eyebrows made by Jun” or “Jun’s eyebrows.” However, the character “Jun” in the master’s name also means “a writer, a spirited horse,” so a looser interpretation of the name is “horse’s eyebrows” (somewhat paradoxical since horses don’t have eyebrows). Later, the character “Jin” (golden) was added to the name, describing the color of the buds of the finished tea. Genuine Jin Jun Mei is a red tea with a high content of buds, grown in the mountains of Ui, the birthplace of Da Hong Pao and other mountain teas, next to unique highly-mineralized soils and a special microclimate. It is thanks to this that Jin Jun Mei is distinguished by its unique taste and aroma, which have earned it such high popularity.
