The first mention of the legendary tea appeared in 1385. The record of Da Hong Pao is still preserved on the walls of the monastery. The legend says that the monks living in the monastery helped the young man, the monks looked after him, gave him tea, after which he quickly recovered. As a sign of gratitude, the young man brought a red robe to the monks, which the monks refused to take. The young man threw a red robe on a tea bush, so Da Hong Pao was called “Big Red Robe”. Another version of the name Da Hong Pao is the red rim that appears on tea leaves.

Taste and properties of Da Hong Pao
For the production of Da Hong Pao, only young tea leaves are harvested, the collection begins in spring, in May. To remove excess moisture from the leaves, they are left in the sun for a day, then they begin the process of fermenting the tea leaf.
The taste of Da Hong Pao is influenced by different components. These are the degree of roasting of the leaves, the place of collection and the purity of the mixture.
Depending on the area where the tea bush grows. Da Hong Pao is divided into groups. The price of Da Hong Pao Oolong tea can vary significantly, depending on the area where the tea was collected.
- Cliff oolong, the leaves are harvested in a mountain gorge, the soil here has a good composition, rich in clay – the best Da Hong Pao is harvested here, this variety is quite rare.
- Ban Shan Cha or semi-cliff, which is located at the foot of the mountains, Da Hong Pao from the collected leaves has a less pronounced taste
- Wai Shan Cha, harvested in the valley, has the least pronounced aroma.
Tea that consists of mixed leaves from different bushes is called blended Da Hong Pao – this type is most often found on sale. A uniform leaf collected from one bush has a noble taste and is considered a more expensive variety.
Da Hong Pao has a rich tart taste and is soft at the same time. It is important to brew correctly in order to feel the whole palette of varied tastes. When choosing tea, pay attention to the uniformity of the tea leaves, without impurities of twigs or other particles, after the second brewing, you may notice green veins on the tea leaves.
